4 Ways to Maximise Your Electric Van Range
Many SMEs using commercial vehicles would like to look at ways to deploy an electric alternative; however, there are often still concerns about making this transition. One of the biggest concerns is around the potentially limited range and electric van can achieve before needing to be re-charged. This fear is often referred to as “range anxiety”.
Whilst it is true that electric vans may achieve fewer miles before needing to be recharged than an ICE vehicle, if electric vehicles (EVs) are operated in the right way, they can be just as, or in some cases even more, efficient to operate than ICE vehicles.
There are several factors that can impact how far an EV can travel on a single charge. In this blog, we focus on four ways your business can maximise the range of your fleet of electric vans.
Reduce Use of Heating or Air Conditioning Whilst Driving
In the winter months you want to heat the cabin to ensure a comfortable journey. Similarly, in summer you may use the air conditioning to stay cool. This uses power from the battery and reduces the vehicle’s range. Instead, consider heating or cooling the cabin whilst the vehicle is still on charge, which uses the energy from the supply as opposed to from your battery. Once on the road, think about heating yourself with additional layers rather than constantly using the heating, or opening windows to remain cool without relying on the climate control systems.
Drive In Eco-Mode
Some vehicles have the option of different power settings. For example, there may be an eco-mode and a sport mode. The eco-mode will generally be the most efficient. Using this mode whilst driving sensibly, with smooth acceleration and braking, will help maximise your EV’s range.
Reduce The Weight of Your Cargo
Usually, if you are using a commercial vehicle, it is because you require the payload for carrying equipment. Increasing the weight of the vehicle requires the battery to work harder to move the vehicle, which can reduce the range. Consider reviewing the items you are carrying and look into ways you can reduce your load. By reviewing your cargo, you may also discover that you require less loading space and a smaller vehicle may be more suited to your needs.
