Common Misconceptions of DVS

With Phase 2 of the DVS coming into play on the 28th October 2024, operators across the country readying their vehicles for compliance.

However, there are a few complications to this transition that could catch you out! Fortunately, Dawsongroup truck and trailer are here to help make the progression into DVS phase 2 as smooth as possible.

Andy Pegg explores the common misconceptions about the DVS.TfL has extended the ‘grace period’ for permits, does this mean I don’t need to take action with my current fleet for the next 6 months?

Whilst Phase 1 compliant vehicles can enter the DVS zone for the next 6 months, the grace period is not automatically granted and must be applied for. To make this application, operators must demonstrate one of the two following scenarios:

  1. That their existing 0–2-star DVS-rated vehicles have a Progressive Safety Kit retrofitted. If these have not yet been completed, an order and a fitting date for each vehicle must be shown. The fitting date must be within 6 months of the 28th October.
  2. New DVS-compliant vehicles (whether 3-star-rated from factory or being retrofitted with a PSS before delivery) must be ordered. Evidence of the order and a delivery date of the vehicles must be shown. The delivery date of the new vehicles must be within 6 months of the 28th October.

We have just had some of our vehicles retrofitted with Progressive Safety Systems. Does this mean these vehicles are now 3-star DVS-rated?

When a vehicle rolls off the production line, it does so with a fixed DVS star rating that does not change throughout its lifetime. Whilst Progressive Safety Systems can be retrofitted, this does not change the vehicle’s star rating, and, if the system is removed, it is no longer considered compliant and cannot be driven into the DVS zone.
