Dawsongroup’s Environmental Commitment
Dawsongroup began its commitment to sustainability and the environment long before the 2050 net zero target was announced by the UK Government. From liquid nitrogen powered refrigerated trucks to gas powered buses and emissions control equipment, Dawsongroup has always considered the environmental impact of its assets and business decisions.
Going Off-Grid
One major focus for Dawsongroup at the moment is adding self-generated solar power into our energy mix, with the potential to take some of our sites completely off-grid. The first of these will be Dawsongroup vans Milton Keynes, which will have a bespoke car/van port with solar panels covering the roof. The projected energy output will take the site off-grid and keep it off-grid even as our electric vehicle fleet expands, whilst battery energy storage systems and smart energy management software will guarantee that the energy generated is stored and used in the most efficient way throughout the year. This will ensure we always have enough energy to keep the offices and facilities powered up to support our customers and other business operations, whilst charging the fleet and even exporting to the grid in times of surplus.
In addition to this, Dawsongroup vans has set up a partnership with Synetiq, the first vehicle salvage, dismantler and recycler in the UK to introduce carbon labelling for its green parts. The vans engineers can now reuse nearly new parts which have been salvaged instead of buying new parts when vehicles need to be repaired or serviced.
Dedication and Strategy
Perhaps most importantly, Dawsongroup has hired a dedicated environmental consultant, Kyle Riley, who is looking in detail at every facet of environmental matters within Dawsongroup. He is in the process of devising a strategy for more environmentally friendly practices across the company, adding to our existing low environmental impact assets and procedures.
A few of the alternative fuel vehicles in our ever-growing portfolio include:
- A fleet of full electric Mercedes-Benz eVito Tourers from Dawsongroup vans
- Carrier Transicold Vector® eCool™ units, the world’s first fully autonomous, all-electric engineless refrigerated trailer system, from Dawsongroup truck and trailer
- BYD ADL Enviro200EV electric buses from Dawsongroup bus and coach
- Bucher V65e truck mounted sweepers, Rasco Lynx Charges, Whale Electric medium volume combination tankers and Tenax Electra 2.0 evos sweepers, all of which are fully electric, from Dawsongroup emc
- Lithium-ion forklift trucks from Dawsongroup material handling
Our alternative solutions don’t end with vehicles. Dawsongroup tcs provides temperature control solutions which make processes more efficient whilst reducing costs and carbon emissions.
The newest part of the company – Dawsongroup power solutions – provides bespoke solutions to meet all your energy needs. They can advise you on generators, solar panels, portable batteries, and battery energy storage systems (BESS), and discuss the best option for your business.
Sustainable Sites
Dawsongroup is also working towards environmentally friendly branches across the country. Our supersite at Avonmouth, which opened in January 2021, is a hub for sustainable working, comprising state-of-the-art facilities and environmentally friendly solutions such as solar panels on the roof and vehicle wash bays which recycle 90% of the water used. We also have our very own Dawson’s Creek – a large pond that fills with rainwater and runoff and so prevents flooding in the local area. The creek is kept as natural as possible to encourage wildlife.
“It isn’t just about having clean energy generation or reusing and recycling resources, but also doing what we can, when we can, to directly maximise our positive impact on nature,” said Kyle Riley, Dawsongroup’s Environmental Consultant. “The more vegetation the better, as vegetation provides valuable habitat for wildlife as well as cleaner water. We’re also looking at our other sites, including the new head office building, to see where we have viable habitats, what we can improve and where we can plant more.”
The Future Is Sustainable
Dawsongroup prides itself on providing assets with cutting edge technology to its customers, ensuring not only that we maintain our sustainability, but also help our customers work towards reducing their carbon emissions. Our Smarter Asset Strategy enables customers to trial alternative fuel vehicles with no risk to their capital whilst facilitating their transition to net zero.
“Ideally, we want to be one step ahead of the market at every point,” said Kyle, “so we can supply those alternative supply chain solutions when the market is ready for it. We’re in a position where we can provide low impact options for customers to trial with no capital outlay, which ensures they get the right solution for their business and won’t be stuck with diesel due to cost restraints.”
Looking to the future, Dawsongroup has plans to establish more supersites where we will combine two or more existing branches into one sustainable location. We are also looking into effective, high quality carbon offsetting programs, and we are redeveloping our head office site with a new low impact building which will significantly reduce our energy consumption.
“There’s rarely a perfect solution when weighing up between business and the natural environment,” said Kyle. “Instead, it’s all about finding the best option from what’s available so we have the least impact on nature.”
